Prepare your listeners for effective communication.”

We have understood that active listening is one of the key components of communication or other effective communication. I too believe that this is true. However, practically speaking and in some circumstances, I  found that I was falling short of understanding the intent and meaning of communication from the sender which led me to think deeply about effective communication.

This led me to a startling insight which said that in the initial part of communication, there is an inherent requirement to set the premise and in the process prepare your listener for the forthcoming communication. This insight greatly altered my understanding of communication and its requirements.

Today, as I implement the insight I do take the first few seconds to define the premise of what the communication is about which sets the tone and expectations. This has greatly helped me to communicate effectively and succinctly thereby contributing immensely to sustaining relationships.
